Retrograde planets in the natal chart
Retrograde motion is the apparent backward movement of a planet through the zodiac. Physically nothing reverses: it is how the orbit looks from Earth. In a natal chart a retrograde planet is not weaker, it simply works inwardly.
How retrograde motion happens
Earth and the other planets orbit the Sun at different speeds. When Earth overtakes an outer planet, or an inner planet overtakes Earth, that planet appears to drift backwards against the stars. The effect is optical, yet astrological tradition reads it as a change of mode: the planet's energy stops flowing outward and turns inward.
The mechanics are described in detail for the most frequent case in retrograde Mercury.
What each retrograde planet means
Mercury
Thinking is not linear: the inner conclusion comes first, words later. Common in people who write more easily than they speak and who double-check information.
Venus
A complicated relationship with self-worth and closeness. It takes time to know what you truly like, and external standards of love and beauty are rarely accepted at face value.
Mars
Anger and initiative are expressed indirectly. Starting is harder, but once motivation matures internally the endurance is high. See also Mars in the zodiac signs.
Jupiter and Saturn
Retrograde Jupiter: meaning and faith are worked out personally rather than inherited. Retrograde Saturn: a strict inner judge and the need to define responsibility on your own terms.
Uranus, Neptune, Pluto
The outer planets are retrograde around forty percent of the time, so their retrograde status is largely generational. It becomes personal when such a planet sits on an angle or closely aspects a luminary.
Stationary planets
For several days around a station a planet barely moves along the ecliptic. Anyone born then carries a very loud planet whose theme becomes central to their life. In the AstroTarget position list such planets show a speed close to zero.
Retrograde motion and planetary strength
Retrograde status is one factor in dignity assessment but does not override it: a planet in domicile is still strong while retrograde. The full set of criteria is in strong and weak planets.
How to use retrograde periods
A transiting retrograde is a time for revision rather than launch. The prefix says it all: review, redo, return, restore. Current retrograde periods can be tracked through transits and in the moon calendar, which has a dedicated retrograde tab.

Frequently asked questions
What does a retrograde planet mean in a natal chart?
That the planet appeared to move backwards at your birth. Its theme is lived more internally: it takes longer to express outwardly but is understood more deeply.
Is retrograde motion a flaw?
No. It is a different mode of operation. Retrograde planets often produce an original, self-developed approach to their theme.
How many retrograde planets is a lot?
Three or more is a noticeable emphasis: such a person usually lives on their own internal schedule and dislikes an imposed pace.
What is a stationary planet?
A planet at the moment of turning, when its speed is near zero. A stationary planet is amplified and its theme dominates the chart.
Can the Sun or Moon be retrograde?
No. The luminaries always move forward, so retrograde motion does not apply to them.
