Firdars: The Persian System of Life Periods
Firdars are a technique that divides life into consecutive periods, each ruled by its own planet according to the Chaldean order. The method comes from Persian and medieval astrological tradition.
Origin of the method
Firdars are one of the oldest techniques for dividing life into periods, tracing back to Persian astrological tradition and widely used by medieval Arab and European astrologers. Unlike symbolic directions and progressions, which are based on points moving by degrees, firdars simply assign a ruling planet to each stretch of life in a predetermined order.
The Chaldean order of rulers
At the heart of the system lies the Chaldean order — the sequence of the seven classical planets by decreasing apparent speed in the sky: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. It is in this sequence that the planets take turns becoming rulers of the major life periods.

The first ruler is determined by whether the birth chart is diurnal or nocturnal: for diurnal charts, life opens with the Sun's period; for nocturnal charts, with the Moon's period; after that the rulers alternate in the order of the sequence.
Major and minor firdars
Major periods
Each planet is allotted its own length of major period — these spans are set by tradition and differ from one another. While the major period lasts, its ruler sets the overall tone of a large life stage: which themes come to the forefront, which planet "speaks" to the person through the events of this time.
Minor periods
Within each major period there are seven minor firdars — shorter sub-periods that are overseen in turn by all the planets, starting with the ruler of the major period and continuing through the Chaldean order. Minor periods clarify exactly how the theme of the major period will sound during each specific stretch of time.
How to read a firdar period
To understand the meaning of a period, look at the position of the ruling planet in the natal chart: which house and sign it's in, which planets it aspects, how strong it is. These very natal characteristics "switch on" for the duration of the period and shape its content.
