What is a natal chart?
A natal chart is a map of the sky at the moment you were born, fixed for a specific place and time. It shows which signs and houses the planets were in and how they interacted with each other.
Definition
A natal chart is a diagram of the positions of the planets of the Solar System, the Sun and the Moon in the sky at the moment of a person's birth, tied to the specific coordinates of a place. It is essentially a photograph of the sky, taken at the first second of life and laid out on a coordinate system: zodiac signs, houses and angles between the planets.
An astrologer builds such a chart using ephemerides — tables that list the exact coordinates of the planets for each date and time. Today, the calculation takes seconds: simply enter the date, time and place, and the program will place all the objects around the zodiac circle.
What a natal chart consists of
The birth chart is made up of several layers that overlap each other.
- Planets — Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.
- Zodiac signs — twelve sectors that define the quality of a planet's expression.
- Houses — twelve spheres of life: career, relationships, home, health and others.
- Aspects — angles between planets, showing how they interact with one another.
- Ascendant and other axes — rising and zenith points at the moment of birth.

Personal planets
The Sun reflects the core of the personality and where a person directs their energy. The Moon shows emotional reactions and the need for safety. Mercury is linked to thinking and speech, Venus to values and attachments, Mars to action and drive.
Social and outer planets
Jupiter and Saturn describe attitudes toward growth and limitation, while Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are slower planets that connect personal history with generational and collective processes.
Zodiac signs in the chart
The sign in which a planet stands determines the style of its expression. The same planet in different signs will behave differently: Mars in Aries acts directly and quickly, while Mars in Cancer acts through protecting loved ones and caution. Houses and spheres of life
