Why a moon calendar is useful

The Moon is the fastest body in the sky: it travels the whole zodiac in about 27–28 days and changes sign every two or three days. Because of that speed, its position is felt most strongly in everyday mood, energy and wellbeing. A moon calendar brings together three parameters at once — the lunar day, the phase and void-of-course periods — and helps you plan the day against that background.

Phases of the Moon: from new moon to new moon

A full lunar cycle is the journey from new moon to full moon and back, roughly 29.5 days. Four major stages are distinguished inside it.

Lunar days: a short cycle inside the cycle

Unlike phases, lunar days are counted not from a date but from the moment of moonrise. The first lunar day begins at the new moon and lasts until the next moonrise, the second runs from there to the following one, and so on, usually up to the 29th or 30th day. Because moonrise shifts every day, one lunar day can stretch to nearly twenty-four hours or shrink to a few.

How to use lunar days

In folk tradition each of the 30 lunar days has its own character — it is said to set the general tone of the day, from suitable activities to recommendations for food and rest. Checking the current lunar day in a ready calendar is far easier than calculating it by hand.

Void-of-course Moon: a pause between matters

While the Moon stays in one sign it forms several aspects with the other planets. But closer to its move into the next sign a moment arrives when all significant aspects are already complete and no new ones will form before the sign changes. That gap is called the void-of-course Moon, abbreviated v/c.

The length of a void-of-course period varies: sometimes it is a couple of minutes, sometimes more than a full day, when the Moon sits at the end of a sign it will not leave soon.

The practical advice is simple: important beginnings — negotiations, signing documents, launching a project — are better moved to a time when the Moon has already entered a new sign and its course is restored. Routine matters and things you are finishing off, on the contrary, go smoothly during this period.

How the moon calendar relates to the natal chart

The current position of the Moon in the calendar is the transiting Moon, and it differs from the Moon of your birth moment recorded in the natal chart.
