Cardinal, fixed and mutable signs
Besides the division into elements, the zodiac is divided into three qualities — cardinal, fixed and mutable. They show not what is expressed in character, but how: how a person starts things, sustains them and brings them to completion.
Why the division into qualities matters
In addition to the elements — fire, earth, air and water — the zodiac signs are divided by one more principle: quality, or cross. If the element answers the question what kind of energy, the quality answers how that energy acts over time. Each season of the year consists of three months, and each is linked to its own quality: the first month of a season is cardinal, the second is fixed, the third is mutable.

The cardinal cross: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn
The cardinal signs open the four seasons — spring, summer, autumn and winter — and therefore symbolise beginnings, impulse and the starting point. People with an excess of cardinality in the chart are initiative-driven, love launching new projects, react quickly to change and are not afraid to take responsibility for the first step.
The flip side is difficulty finishing things: cardinal energy is generously spent on the start but fades quickly if not supported by fixed qualities in the chart. Such people often become leaders, entrepreneurs and organisers — those who set the direction for others.
The fixed cross: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius
The fixed signs fall in the middle of the season, when its character is fully established. This quality is responsible for stability, persistence, the ability to hold a course and carry what was started to a result. People with an excess of fixity are known for reliability, patience and strong will, but often also for stubbornness and resistance to any change, even when it is objectively necessary.
Fixed signs complement cardinal ones well: where cardinality gives the impulse, fixity provides endurance and completion of the cycle. It is the balance of these two qualities that determines whether a person can not only start things but also see them through.
The mutable cross: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces
The mutable signs close the season and prepare the transition to the next one, so their key theme is flexibility, adaptation and the ability to adjust to changing circumstances. People with an excess of mutability switch easily between tasks and grasp new information quickly, but may struggle with consistency and with holding a single direction.
This quality is often linked to mediating, teaching or communicative work — anywhere it matters to be a conductor between different ideas, people or systems rather than to hold one viewpoint at any cost.

What to count
To assess the balance of qualities, take the positions of the ten planets (from the Sun to Pluto) plus the ascendant and midheaven, and distribute them among the three groups — cardinal, fixed and mutable signs. The group with the most points indicates the dominant behavioural strategy. Signs of an excess of each quality
An excess of cardinality shows up as initiative and a tendency to launch new things more often than finishing old ones. An excess of fixity appears as persistence, stability and resistance to external change. An excess of mutability shows as flexibility, curiosity and difficulty concentrating on a single goal for long. An even distribution across all three qualities points to a versatile, adaptive behavioural style without a pronounced skew.
If a quality is missing
A complete absence of a quality in the chart does not mean the corresponding function is unavailable to the person — it develops through experience and conscious effort, and is partially compensated by emphases in houses and aspects. For example, a lack of cardinality can be worked through via the houses associated with initiative, even without such support in the signs.
