Elements in the natal chart: fire, earth, air, water

The twelve zodiac signs are grouped into four elements: fire, earth, air and water. The distribution of planets across the elements describes your basic temperament, what comes naturally and what has to be developed on purpose.

The four elements

Fire

Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Spontaneity, initiative, confidence, a need for movement and recognition. Fire ignites quickly and loses interest just as fast without a response.

Earth

Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Practicality, reliance on facts, attention to body, money and results. Earth starts slowly but finishes what it begins.

Air

Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Thinking, communication, exchange of ideas, distance and objectivity. Air makes connections easily but can drift into theory.

Water

Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Feeling, memory, empathy, intuition. Water senses context and mood before facts and forms deep attachments.

Calculating the balance

The simple method counts how many planets sit in signs of each element. A more precise method applies weights: the Sun and Moon count two to three points, personal planets one and a half, outer planets one, with the ascendant and midheaven counted separately. The second layer of analysis is described in cardinal, fixed and mutable signs.

A dominant element

The leading element describes your habitual reaction. Too much fire means acting before analysing, too much earth means needing guarantees, too much air means explaining feelings instead of living them, too much water means intense involvement and difficulty with distance.

A missing element

Without fire, spontaneity and a confident "I want" are harder to reach. Without earth, everyday practical matters and money take extra effort. Without air, wording and detachment are challenging. Without water, recognising your own feelings takes practice. These themes usually arrive through partners, work and deliberate effort, much like the North Node growth direction.

Element compatibility

Fire and air support each other, as do earth and water. Fire with water, or earth with air, need translation: what is obvious to one has to be explained to the other. The same principle is applied to couples in synastry.

Frequently asked questions

Which signs belong to each element?

Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.

How is the element balance calculated?

By counting planets in the signs of each element, usually with weights: the luminaries and personal planets count for more than the outer planets. AstroTarget shows the result in the elements and modalities section.

What does a dominant element mean?

A pronounced temperament and predictable reactions. A fire dominance, for example, brings drive and initiative but also a tendency to rush.

What if an element is missing?

It is not a defect. A missing element usually means those qualities are developed through experience and through other people rather than given automatically.

How are elements different from modalities?

The element answers what kind of reaction you have, the modality (cardinal, fixed, mutable) answers how you act over time: initiate, sustain or adapt.
