How to find your ascendant by birth time
The ascendant (ASC) is the degree of the zodiac rising over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It is the fastest point of the chart, shifting about one degree every four minutes, so it needs an accurate time and place.
What the ascendant is
Earth rotates once a day, so all twelve signs rise over the eastern horizon within twenty-four hours. The sign and degree rising at the minute of birth is the ascendant. It is also the cusp of the first house, from which the entire house system is built, as described in astrological houses.
What the calculation needs
Date of birth
Sets the Sun's position and the sidereal time reference point.
Exact time
The critical value. Every four minutes shifts the ascendant by about a degree, every two hours changes the sign. A thirty-minute error can move a planet into the neighbouring house.
Place of birth

How the ascendant is calculated
By hand it goes through sidereal time: local time is converted to UT, local sidereal time is derived, and spherical trigonometry gives the ecliptic degree on the eastern horizon. In practice a calculator is faster and also builds all twelve Placidus house cusps at once.
