Sun and Moon aspects in the natal chart
The aspect between the Sun and the Moon is one of the most important indicators in a chart. It shows how well will and feeling cooperate, and the same angle defines the lunar phase you were born under.
Why this aspect matters
The Sun stands for will, purpose and conscious identity. The Moon stands for needs, habits and emotional response. The angle between them shows whether these two forces pull together or apart, which is why the Sun-Moon aspect is examined early in any reading, right after the luminaries by sign and house and the ascendant.

The major aspects one by one
Conjunction (0 degrees)
Born at new Moon. Will and feeling merge: you want what you feel and feel what you want. Strong drive, but limited ability to see yourself from the outside.
Sextile (60 degrees)
Gentle support. Emotions help you act if you make a small effort. Often shows as easy learning and a talent for negotiating with yourself.
Square (90 degrees)
First or last quarter Moon. Constant friction between duty and desire, ambition and the need for rest. The most productive of the hard aspects: it forces movement rather than stagnation.
Trine (120 degrees)
Inner agreement and a stable emotional baseline. Self-support comes naturally, though without an external challenge it can slide into inertia.
Opposition (180 degrees)
Born at full Moon. The luminaries face each other, giving high awareness and a sense of inner division. These people often live out their themes through relationships, with the partner acting as a mirror.
Birth phase and the signs involved
The Sun-Moon angle defines the phase: a waxing Moon emphasises building and moving forward, a waning Moon reflection and completion. The mechanics of the phases are covered in the moon calendar guide.

Orbs and precision
Use the widest orbs in the chart for the luminaries: up to ten degrees for conjunction and opposition, eight for trine and square, six for sextile. An aspect within one degree becomes a leading theme for the whole chart.

Frequently asked questions
Which Sun-Moon aspect is the best?
There is no universally best aspect. Trines and sextiles give inner agreement and ease, squares and oppositions are harder to live with but supply drive and awareness.
What orb should I use for the luminaries?
The Sun and Moon take the widest orbs in the chart: eight to ten degrees for major aspects. The tighter the aspect, the more clearly it shows in behaviour.
What does a new Moon birth mean?
A Sun-Moon conjunction means you were born at new Moon: will and needs point the same way, giving wholeness but making self-observation harder.
What if the Sun and Moon form no aspect?
Then conscious goals and emotional needs run fairly independently. Such people often switch easily between very different roles.
