Lilith in the natal chart

Lilith, or the Black Moon, is not a planet or an asteroid but a calculated point: the apogee of the lunar orbit, the spot where the Moon is furthest from Earth. In a chart it describes temptation, repressed desire and the part of yourself you refuse to acknowledge.

What the Black Moon is

The Moon travels an ellipse with Earth at one focus. The nearest point is the perigee, the furthest is the apogee, and that apogee is what astrologers call Black Moon Lilith. Nothing physical sits there, which is why it belongs to the fictitious points of the chart.

Symbolically the apogee is the maximum distance from the ordinary lunar theme of care and safety. Hence the interpretation: Lilith shows what has been pushed out of your self-image.

Mean and true Lilith

Mean Lilith

Calculated from the even, averaged motion of the apogee. It moves smoothly through the zodiac and is the classical version used by most schools.

True (osculating) Lilith

Accounts for the real perturbations of the orbit, moving back and forth and sometimes departing far from the mean position. If your Lilith falls near a sign boundary, compare both and see which description matches your experience.

Lilith through the signs

The sign shows what kind of theme is repressed. In Aries it is anger and direct will, in Taurus the body, money and pleasure, in Gemini speaking the truth about yourself, in Cancer the need for protection, in Leo the wish to be seen, in Virgo control and perfectionism.

In Libra Lilith relates to dependence on approval, in Scorpio to power and passion, in Sagittarius to dogma and being right, in Capricorn to ambition and hardness, in Aquarius to freedom and alienation, in Pisces to escapism and self-sacrifice.

Lilith through the houses

The house shows where the theme surfaces most often: the first house through appearance and manner, the seventh through relationships, the eighth through money, sexuality and crisis, the tenth through career and reputation. See astrological houses for the meaning of each area.

Aspects to Lilith

A conjunction with a personal planet is the strongest configuration: that planet's theme takes on both tension and magnetism. Lilith on the Sun affects self-image, on the Moon early emotional experience, on Venus love and money, on Mars anger and desire.

Aspects to the luminaries are best read together with Sun and Moon aspects. Keep orbs narrow for fictitious points, no more than three degrees.

Working with the Lilith theme

First acknowledge the desire instead of fighting it. Then find a legitimate form for it, because a repressed Lilith usually hides a large reserve of energy. Finally, watch the transits: when a slow planet crosses your Black Moon, the theme comes to the surface.

Frequently asked questions

What is Lilith in astrology?

Black Moon Lilith is the apogee of the lunar orbit. It is a fictitious point symbolising the shadow side of the personality: suppressed desires, temptations and self-judgement.

What is the difference between mean and true Lilith?

Mean Lilith uses the averaged motion of the apogee; true or osculating Lilith follows its real oscillation. They can differ by up to about 30 degrees, so the sign is sometimes different.

Is Lilith a bad placement?

No. It marks an area where you are both vulnerable and unusually strong. Worked with consciously, the Lilith theme turns from self-sabotage into a resource.

Does AstroTarget show Lilith?

Yes. Black Moon Lilith belongs to the fictitious points, which are hidden by default and can be enabled in the chart display settings.

How fast does Lilith change sign?

Black Moon Lilith completes the zodiac in about 8.85 years, so it stays roughly nine months in each sign.
